HOW DIFFICULT IS THE HIKE?
The Inca Trail is considered a moderate hike. It’s not a technical hike but there are a lot of Inca staircases to walk up and down, and the altitude may affect some individuals. We recommend the rental of a wooden walking stick locally from our office in Cuzco as it will help with your balance and reduce the load on your knees.
WHEN IS THE BEST TIME OF YEAR TO DO THE TREK?
The dry season from April to October is probably the most comfortable period as far as the weather is concerned For the Machu Picchu tour, the warmer season is from November to March but it is also the rain season.
Most people prefer to trek during the dry season if possible, the beginning (April and May) and the end (September and October) of the dry season offer the optimal conditions for trekking
How long is the Inca trail and how many hours do we hike per day?
The Inca Trail is 42 kms (26 miles) long. Campsites along the Trail are assigned by the INC (National Institute of Culture) and for this reason it is difficult to determine the distance to be covered in a day but expect to walk 6 to 9 hours per day for the first three days and approximately 2 hours on the last day.
HOW FAR IN ADVANCE DO I NEED TO BOOK MY INKA TRAIL?
We recommend booking as early as possible. Inca Trail can be sold out for many months in advance, particularly in the high season.
THERE ARE RESTRICTIONS ON THE NUMBER OF PEOPLE WHO CAN TREK?
HOW MUCH OF MY PERSONAL EFFECTS WILL THE PORTER CARRY?
The porter will be able to carry up to 14kg / 30lbs of personal effects plus the food and equipment necessary for your trek. You are normally given the option of hiring porters by half the weight they carry (7kg / 15lbs) as most tourists do not require more than this.
ARE THEIR TOILETS ALONG THE TRAIL?
There are available portable toilets tents at all the campsites; also there are many basic toilets along the trail.
Which campsites do you use?
Campsites are subject to change depending upon the crowds and the season. We generally try to camp in less trafficked areas so that travelers can enjoy the natural beauty of the Inca trail and minimize environmental impacts. Our typical campsite choices are Huayllabamba, Pacaymayo and Wiñay Wayna or Puyupatamarca.
CAN I USE TREKKING POLES OR WALKING STICKS ON THE INCA TRAIL?
It helps when you are climbing steps and on various sections of the trail. We normally recommended trekking poles but the spikes should be protected with rubber tips so not to destroy the paved Incan stones. You can purchase trekking poles in Cusco made of dry bamboo wood.
WHAT TYPE OF FOOD WILL WE GET ON THE INCA TRAIL?
We provide excellent meals appropriate for a trek of this nature. The menu usually includes pasta, rice, chicken, fresh fruit and vegetables and a variety of oatmeal, eggs and other breakfast foods. Vegetarian meals are also available upon request. Other special dietary requests can usually be accommodated as well with sufficient notice.
Is purified water available on the trail?
Bottled water can be purchased on day 1 and on the evening of day 3 of the Inca Trail however we discourage trekkers from purchasing bottles as it increases the amount of garbage that must be packed out. We recommend that you bring a refillable water bottle as boiled water will be provided in the morning at breakfast, at lunch and every evening after dinner.
